How are signaling events transmitted from one protein to another? To answer this question we are looking to add a postdoctoral co-workers to our interdisciplinary team. Our interest is to understand protein-protein interactions, protein structure and dynamics in the context of cell signaling mechanisms. {e.g. see our recent papers J.Biol.Chem.,282, 37215-37224 (2007), Structure 16, 246-258 (2008) and J.Mol.Biol. 377, 1474-87 (2008)}. The systems include several small GTPases and their interacting proteins, principally the cytoplasmic domains of plexins and of other receptors.

Research in protein biophysics/structural biology. We principally use solution NMR for protein structure determination, surface mapping and characterization of conformational change. The project may involve amide hydrogen exchange, NMR relaxation and molecular dynamics simulation as additional tools. NMR facilities at the Cleveland Center for Structural Biology consist of two 600 MHz, an 800 MHz and an 900 MHz Bruker spectrometers all with cryoprobes, making the Center one of the premier NMR facilities in the US. Apart from NMR, we employ other biophysical techniques including circular dichroism and fluorescence spectroscopy as well as isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC). Recently have started x-ray crystallography as a second major component to the laboratory (a Rigaku MicroMax-007 HF instrument with a 94x94mm CCD detector has recently been installed for crystal screening) and are also moving into cell biology.

We are looking for talented and motivated coworkers, who aim to become independent researchers/project leaders. Prior experience with protein NMR or x-ray crystallography is essential.. The Buck laboratory provides a stimulating but friendly working environment – we are still relatively small & young, which has advantages. The Medical School of Case Western Reserve University is highly rated overall in the US (~ 13th in terms of NIH funding) and Cleveland is a pleasant but affordable place to live with excellent educational, medical and cultural institutions.
