The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is a World Heritage Railway. It is one of the very few remaining steam operated railways in the world. Opened to traffic on June 15,1899, this 46 km. meter gauge (1000 mm) track is the steepest hill railway in India; and the only one of its kind with a rack-and-pinion traction, operating on a gradient of 1 in 12.50 ie 1 foot ascent/descent for every 12.50 feet of travel. The X Class engines with wheel arrangement 0-8-2T, were built between 1914 and 1949 at the Swiss Locomotive & Machine Works (SLM), WInterthur. Few of these are still in active service on this line. Three of the vintage coal-fired engines have now been successfully converted to oil-firing at the Indian Railways workshop at Golden Rock, Tiruchirappalli. Seen in this video is the coal-fired steam engine #X-37392 chugging uphill toward Coonoor, en route to Ooty, with the passengers from the Chennai-Mettupalayam Nilagiri Express. VMGovind Krishnan's book: "NMR [Nilgiri Mountain Railway]-From Lifeline to Oblivion", documents the efforts of the public to thwart the moves of the Indian government to dismantle this unique railway, and keep it in running condition.
