Default NMR Postdoc position at University of Alberta; Deadline: October 30th, 2006

Post-doctoral Fellow in Prion Structural Biology

Dr. Wishart research group.

University of Alberta

We are looking for a post-doctoral fellow with an interest and experience in NMR spectroscopyand structural biology who will undertake research in the structural characterization of hamster prion fragments using NMR spectroscopy. We have just received a 3-year, $1.7 million research grant sponsored by the Alberta Prion Research Institute (APRI) to characterize the structure and dynamics of prions using novel NMR, MS and computational methods. The individual hired for this position will have an opportunity to work with a team of leading structural biologists and protein chemists to support their research objectives. The individual will also have an opportunity to learn and/or develop cutting edge techniques in structural biology, NMR spectroscopy, protein chemistry and other biophysical techniques. NMR studies will be conducted on a 500 MHz Varian spectrometer equipped with a triple resonance, 3-axis gradient cryoprobe, as well as an 800 MHz Varian instrument at NANUC. Depending on experience, the salary is between $36,000 to $45,000 CAD.

The ideal candidate would have the following qualifications:

1) A Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biophysics or Biology

2) At least three-year experience with structural analysis of proteins with high-resolution NMR.

3) Familiarity with expression, purification and refolding of recombinant proteins.

4) Computer proficiency with a good understanding of UNIX and structure refinement/generation
software

5) Prior experience in working with protein amyloid samples would be an asset

6) Prior experience with electron microscopy, light scattering or other biophysical techniques would also be an asset

Application Deadline: Oct. 30th

Availability to start Oct-Jan.
