Proton Magnetic Res Spectrum Question?

The proton magnetic resonance spectrum of N,N-dimethylformamide shows two different chemical shifts for the hydrogen atoms on the methyl group. This phenomena is not due to spin-spin coupling. If not, what is it due to?

Proton Magnetic Res Spectrum Question?

If you work out the resonance hybrids for this molecule, the pi system includes the N atom, which will therefore be planar and not pyramidal. One of the CH3 groups will therefore be a lot nearer the O atom than the other, and will be fixed in that orientation.
