Default Associate Research Scientist

Associate Research Scientist
Lake County, IL

Aspire to look to the future with purpose.

A global specialty pharmaceutical and medication delivery company, Hospira is Advancing Wellness&#8482 by developing, manufacturing, and marketing industry-leading hospital products and technology solutions. As important as what we do is how we do it. Hospira takes great care to hire, develop, and keep the right people - people of integrity who are motivated to take ownership of their careers, people who embody our values and entrepreneurial spirit.

Associate Research Scientist
In this role you will become a senior member of Hospira's Impurity Identification team within Pharmaceutical R&D. This team will be responsible for identifying unknown impurities and degradation products in drug products and drug substances for both internal and external customers. You will be expected to be proficient in both cGMP and non-GxP laboratory work, primarily designing and performing testing in support of this effort through structural characterization by NMR. You may also be required to perform LC/MS, GC/MS, preparative HPLC, NMR, and other analytical techniques as needed to elucidate the structure of unknowns. Technical oversight with experimental design and strategy will be assisted by the other senior members of the team, but the execution of the experiments and the critical thinking ability to complete them will be your responsibility.

Additionally, with supervision as required, you will perform all assigned analytical and basic organic chemistry techniques; demonstrate a good understanding of scientific principles and their cause and effect on scientific outcomes; and follow GMP, as required. You will also be responsible for authoring and verifying protocols, reports, specifications and test methods, present results at team meetings with interpretation, and participate in coaching and mentoring junior staff.

Other responsibilities:
* Perform all assigned laboratory tasks with occasional supervision
* Author protocols, reports and analytical methods and may review or critique others
* Coordinate the IQ/OQ/PQ of Hospira's newly acquired NMR, ensuring it achieves and maintains GMP status
* Generate, analyze and present scientific data at team meetings
* Explain cause and effect relationships and propose additional experiments to prove/disprove hypotheses

Please Note: Approximately 50 % of the job will be spent on non-GxP impurity identification projects. Many of the activities will not have a clearly defined method or protocol. You must be able to think on your feet to independently complete experiments. The remaining 50 % of the job will be spent supporting external development programs for the One 2 One® business unit which may entail routine laboratory testing and compliance with cGMP.

To be successful in this position, you must possess:

* BS degree in Chemistry or Biochemistry (or other closely related field) is required with at least 10 years of experience in a Pharmaceutical company or related industry
* MS degree Analytical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry or Bioanalytical Chemistry (or other closely related field) and at least 5 years of pharmaceutical experience or a Ph.D. in the above related fields with 3 years experience
* Hands on experience in NMR and some of the following analytical techniques (e.g. liquid-liquid and solid phase extractions, preparative HPLC, UPLC, GC, LC/MS/MS) is also required
* Experience in structural elucidation through analytical techniques is preferred

We offer an agile, yet balanced work culture and the types of compensation and benefits you'd expect from an industry leader. We'll provide the tools and resources you need to reach and exceed your career goals through professional development, education reimbursement, and much more.
