This hereditary neurodegenerative condition is one of the family of prion diseases that afflict mammals and include bovine spongiform encephalopathy (often referred to colloquially as "mad cow disease"), Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans, their equivalents in cats, mice, hamsters and other animals.
